PENNSYLVANIA: The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa has called for a transformative vision for Grand Kru and southeastern Liberia.

According to a release, Speaker Koffa Spoke at the weekend in the United States at the Grand Kru Development Association Convention in Philadelphia speaker Koffa stressed the importance of adopting an asset-based approach to development, highlighting the region’s strengths rather than its challenges.

Too often, development conversations focus on what we lack,” Koffa remarked. “But Grand Kru is defined by its assets our people, our land, and our culture. By leveraging these, we can create sustainable and inclusive growth.” Speaker asserts.

The Grand Kru County Electoral District 2 Representative outlined three pivotal assets essential for the region’s upliftment:

Natural Resources: He stressed the importance of sustainable practices in agriculture, fishing, and eco-tourism, urging the community to protect their land from illicit mining activities that threaten both the environment and future livelihoods. “If we cannot solve the illicit mining problem, our county will be a wasteland in a few years,” he warned.

Human Capital: Highlighting the potential of Grand Kru’s people, Koffa called for increased investment in education and vocational training. He noted the challenges faced by newly built schools that remain vacant due to a lack of teachers, and emphasized the need to foster entrepreneurial initiatives to empower community members.

Cultural Heritage: Koffa expressed the importance of preserving and promoting the region’s rich cultural identity. He advocated for integrating cultural programs into education and showcasing Grand Kru’s heritage to attract tourism and investment.

The Speaker also argued the critical need for infrastructure improvements, particularly the southeastern coastal highway. “The southeast is next to the fastest growing economy in West Africa, and improving our roads is essential for economic growth,” he stated.

He revealed a commitment to allocate $50 million annually over six years to pave the highway, recognizing the logistical challenges posed by poor road conditions.

Speaker Koffa underscored that development is a collective endeavor, urging partnerships among the government, international organizations, the private sector, and the Grand Kru Development Association.

“No government will do for you what you are not willing to do for yourself,” he asserted, encouraging attendees to adopt a mindset focused on possibilities rather than problems.

The Grand Kru Lawmaker urged attendees to recognize their connection to Grand Kru, regardless of their physical distance.

Every effort counts,” he said, calling for investments, skill sharing, and advocacy to uplift the region. “By focusing on our strengths and working together, we can ensure a thriving future for Grand Kru and southeastern Liberia for generations to come.” he averred.

The convention concluded with a renewed sense of hope and determination, as attendees left inspired to take action toward a brighter future for their homeland.
