CAPITOL HILL, MONROVIA: Embattled House Speaker Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa has taken responsibility for the growing disagreement within the House of Representatives, conceding criticisms about his leadership style but firmly denying allegations of corruption or favoritism.

“I take full responsibility for how things have been run,” Koffa stated, admitting that his approach may have appeared “laissez-faire” and less hands-on than necessary.

The Speaker’s acknowledgment comes at a time, as tensions within the House have escalated, with sections forming both in support of and against his leadership.

Pundits have accused Koffa of allowing the House’s divisions to deepen through ineffective leadership.

However, Koffa rebutted claims that his governance involved any favoritism or unethical practices, particularly regarding his relationship with TIA, a company rumored to benefit from his influence. “Yes, they are my friends,” Koffa admitted, “but no one can show where I have intervened for them.”

Koffa’s remarks signal a rare moment of reflection and accountability, though they come amid intense scrutiny and calls for his removal. Some lawmakers have viewed his leadership as permissive, allegedly allowing certain representatives to leverage their positions for personal gain.

In recent weeks, this perception has fueled suspicions, leading to a palpable divide within the House.

Despite the turmoil, Koffa urged his colleagues to set aside differences and focus on their shared mandate to serve the Liberian people. “We need to move past this division and work together for the good of the people,” he said, stressing the importance of unity and collaboration.

The Speaker’s appeal for unity may be an attempt to rebuild trust within the House, as he seeks to preserve his role amid growing dissatisfaction. However, with his leadership under close watch, many are left wondering whether Koffa’s pledge for accountability and cohesion will be enough to bridge the gaps among lawmakers and restore stability within the House of Representatives.
