MONROVIA: Three Hundred Forty-Six school-going kids from across three Counties in Liberia will this year benefit from vacation jobs provided through the Ministry of Labour.
Making the disclosure to Journalists at the Ministry of Labour over the weekend, Minister Cooper W. Kruah Sr. commented on the importance of the initiative as schools are about to reopen, the ministry has seen it necessary to reduce financial responsibility on parents by providing holiday employment.
Forming part of their basic social responsibility to the communities in which they are operating, Minister Kruah underline that some business institutions have committed to financing the initiative.
“We intend to do this on a more holistic basis, but that will be for next year. This year we thought that we should do a little bit of test case where we will speak to some of our business partners to help some students within the environment where they are working. That will form part of their social responsibility obligation to the community.”
The Liberian Labour Minister named Montserrado, Margibi, and Grand Bassa Counties as the foremost three counties in which students are going to be recruited from for these jobs opportunities.
The Labor Ministry, with the support of key partners, has allocated over $27,800 USD for the program, which will be implemented in three pilot counties: Montserrado, Margibi, and Grand Bassa. According to the Minister, this financial support will enable students to cover some of their back-to-school expenses, providing much-needed assistance under the prevailing economic conditions.
In his remarks, Minister Kruah also applauded several companies and institutions for their collaboration in providing vacation jobs for students this academic year. He specifically mentioned AFCONS, Liberia Agriculture Company (LAC), Monrovia Breweries, Bea Mountain Mining Company, Mano Manufacturing Company, and Capital Link Cement Company, among others.
Minister Kruah further revealed that the Ministry is constructing a library that will assist individuals who are seeking employment.
According to the Minister, the library will be used to keep records of future available job vacancies for Liberians.
