LIBERIA: Rep. Koon Requests Investigation into Delay of Bills in Committees Room

CAPITOL HILL, MONROVIA: Representative Richard Nagbe Koon; Montserrado County Electoral District 11 representation at the House of Representatives has written a communication requesting the Plenary of the House to probe into the delay and lingering matter of Bills in Committee Rooms.

In his letter, the Montserrado County lawmaker told his colleagues that he’s writing to request a discharge of nine(9) legislative instruments he submitted for passage.

“Even though given two weeks to report back to plenary, the relevant committees are yet to do so, making the Bills to linger in committee room beyond the statutory period of 30 days as required by the House’s Rules.”

The letter read.

Representative Koon’s decision to recall nine bills he submitted in the House’s first sitting is in accordance with Rule 39.1 which gives any member of the sitting to a right to issue a notification to discharge long overdue bills in committees room.

It can be recalled that some of the below Bills submitted by the Lawmaker were sent to the following committees.

A. An Act to Amend Title 12, Chapter 1, Part 1, Executive Law, Liberian Codes of Law Revised by Creating the New Sub-Chapter “E” to be Known as the Presidential Act, was sent to the Committees on Executive, Judiciary, Elections and Inauguration

B. Loan Agreement between Republic of Liberia and African Development Fund (Program for Advancing Youth Entrepreneurship Investment (PAYEI) was sent to the committee on Ways and Means, Commerce & Industry

C. An Act to Repeal Chapter 25, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Title 12, Executive Law of 1972, Liberian Codes of Law Revised to establish in its stead, a new Chapter 25 to be known as the Ministry of Local Government. This Bill was sent to the Committee on Internal Affairs.
