MONROVIA: Attorney Gbawuo Kuwou has called on aspiring journalists to maintain high ethical standards in their profession, emphasizing that the power of words can be more potent than bullets. He cautioned that the stories journalists choose to report have the potential to either propel Liberia forward or keep the nation stagnant.

Attorney Kuwou delivered this message as the keynote speaker during the 4th Commencement Convocation of the Professional Journalism School of Liberia, held over the weekend in Paynesville. In his address, he stressed the critical role that journalists play in shaping public opinion and driving societal change.

He highlighted that the responsibilities of journalists extend far beyond merely sitting behind microphones. According to Attorney Kuwou, journalists must step out of their comfort zones and venture into hard-to-reach areas to truly understand the lives and struggles of ordinary citizens. This, he noted, is essential for obtaining firsthand accounts and reporting on the real conditions affecting the population.

“Journalists are the torchbearers of society,” Attorney Kuwou declared, underscoring the significant influence the media holds. He pointed out that the media has the power to make the powerful feel powerless and to sway public perception, which can have serious implications for justice and fairness.

The legal practitioner further warned that the misuse of this power could have dire consequences. He emphasized that ethical journalism is crucial for the practice of good journalism, and any deviation from this could undermine the integrity of the profession.

Attorney Kuwou also encouraged the graduates to be fearless in their pursuit of truth, while simultaneously maintaining a strong commitment to ethical principles. He urged them to be mindful of the impact their words can have on society and to use their platform to promote justice, equality, and progress.

The convocation ceremony, attended by several dignitaries, marked a significant milestone for the graduates who are now poised to enter the media industry. Attorney Kuwou’s address served as a powerful reminder of the responsibilities they will carry as they embark on their careers in journalism.
