…While Calling for Comprehensive Anti-Corruption Measures…
MONROVIA: The Executive Director of Integrity Watch Liberia (IWL), Harold Aidoo has praised President Joseph N. Boakai for what the Civil Rights Institution Boss describes as “his resolute stance against corruption” and demonstration of political will to prosecute former officials of government who are alleged to have engaged in corrupt practices.
In a release, Executive Director Aidoo said, the President’s recent directive to the Minister of Justice to pursue justice signifies a pivotal moment in Liberia’s ongoing battle against corruption.
He also mentioned that such commitment is a beacon of hope for all Liberians who have long yearned for accountability and transparency in governance.
While applauding the President’s efforts, the IWL Boss also calls on President Boakai to reinforce his commitment by ensuring that the Liberian Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), the General Auditing Commission (GAC), and all other anti-graft institutions are adequately resourced and empowered to execute their mandates effectively.
These institutions according to the IWL Executive Director, play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the country’s governance systems, and must perform without fear, favor, or undue influence.
“Adequate funding, capacity building, and political support are essential to their success.” The release stated.
Furthermore, the Civil Rights Institution is urging President Boakai to extend the fight against corruption beyond the indictees of the Weah administration.
“Historical audit reports have implicated officials from the Unity Party during the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf administration, yet many of these individuals were never prosecuted. It is imperative that the fight against corruption is not selective.”
“The President must ensure a robust and comprehensive approach, addressing corruption irrespective of political affiliation or past administration. This comprehensive strategy will demonstrate that the days of selective justice and impunity are truly over.” He Continues
However, IWL has called on the leadership of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), mainly former President George Weah, to discontinue threatening the state.
According to the Institution, If the CDC believes in the innocence of their officials, the party should present its case and acquit themselves in the courts of law.
“The cycle of impunity that has plagued Liberia for too long must be brought to an end,” Aidoo noted
While standing firm in its support for President Boakai’s vision of a transparent and accountable Liberia, IWL is encouraging all stakeholders to join in the crucial fight against corruption to guarantee that justice prevails and that the nation can move forward toward a brighter, more equitable future.
